Trauma in the Trunk

FAST23 - Las Vegas - May 8 - 10, 2023 - Zaffer Qasim

While there have been a lot of improvements in the treatment of trauma, one of the most overlooked areas of improvement has been in thoracic trauma, or trauma in the trunk. There is a lot of space for blood to collect and hide in the trunk, making detection and treatment difficult, especially in transport medicine.

Internal thoracic bleeding refers to bleeding inside the chest cavity, specifically in the thorax area containing the heart, lungs, and major blood vessels. This type of bleeding can be caused by trauma, such as a car accident, fall, or severe blunt force trauma. Internal thoracic bleeding is a medical emergency that requires prompt treatment to prevent life-threatening complications. The severity of internal thoracic bleeding can vary, depending on the underlying cause and the amount of blood loss.

How is the industry putting new and more effective means of detection and treatment for thoracic trauma into the hands of both in-hospital and transport providers?
