Trauma in the Trunk – Apollo MedFlight

While there have been a lot of improvements in the treatment of trauma, one of the most overlooked areas of improvement has been in thoracic trauma, or trauma in the trunk. There is a lot of space for blood to collect and hide in the trunk, making detection and treatment difficult, especially in transport medicine.

Internal thoracic bleeding refers to bleeding inside the chest cavity, specifically in the thorax area containing the heart, lungs, and major blood vessels. This type of bleeding can be caused by trauma, such as a car accident, fall, or severe blunt force trauma. Internal thoracic bleeding is a medical emergency that requires prompt treatment to prevent life-threatening complications. The severity of internal thoracic bleeding can vary, depending on the underlying cause and the amount of blood loss.

Zaffer Qasim is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Karachi. He completed his residency and fellowship training in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care in the United Kingdom. He also worked as an attending (consultant) emergency physician and operational EMS physician. He moved to the United States to complete training in Trauma/Surgical Critical Care at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland, before moving to Philadelphia. His academic interests lie in advanced trauma and endovascular resuscitation, airway<br>management, simulation, and pre-hospital care. </p>
