The Art of Saying Thank You

thank you quotes

I’ll just start out by saying WORDS MATTER. I’ll follow that up with a warning that this may be a bit of rant.  Simple manners have seemed to have lost their way…Going on my 23rd year in EMS, I’ve been victim and perpetrator of poor manners. As an EMT, going the extra mile on station duties… as a medic, going above and beyond the weekly inventory and throwing in a rig detail. Things I did because I wanted to, not because I was looking for affirmation, but still…there is a little piece in all of us that just want to hear the magic words…right?

It is just simple psychology! We aren’t launching a rocket into space, we are building relationships and intimacy. As an EMS supervisor, I was all over the board within the Maslow’s hierarchy. If you work in a high-performance system, it’s almost impossible to even provide basic physiological needs such as food, water, and rest!  Of course, most crews bring their own food and water, but rest?....ya, that ain’t happening! I could however make sure they stayed safe, had good functioning equipment, listen to their war stories about how they snatched a life from the jaws of death…and that’s good because it was all I could do to build trust and work on that relationship. Rarely did it bring belongingness and love. Not my fault, but still…it drove me crazy because I wanted that for my crews. When I tried to give words of praise, either privately or in a group setting…what did they always say? “I was just doing my job”. EMS’ers are funny that way. Deep down, I know words matter to them too, they just show it in different ways. Do you go out of your way to thank people for the job they do? To build them up and really let them know you appreciate them? Do you thank them for making things a little easier on you? How about the opposite? Do you get pissed off when station duties or inventory didn’t get done or do you pitch in and help because maybe they were up all night or had a crappy call. Offering a hand goes a long way in our business.

I'll just leave you with a few quotes

“Please be polite. Nothing in life should erode the habit of saying thank you to people or praising them.”

— Richard Branson

“Don’t Let the sun go down without saying thank you to someone, and without admitting to yourself that absolutely no one gets this far alone”

— Stephen King

Thanks for reading this post! It means a lot to me!
